I do not understand the top two frames – the rest of the comic is not about stairs, but a rope bridge. Please explain!

We refer to those two panels as the “A and B” or “Throw away Gags”. Most newspapers leave them off. So we just put the ants having a conversation there this week! Sometimes we have them be a lead up to the strip. Thanks!
