Reasons why we don’t see them any more: Habitat loss to development, overuse of pesticides and lawn fertilizers, and increased light pollution are behind the declining firefly populations.

They were the highlight of my childhood summer nights. My dad would take us 3 little girls out in the backyard to capture them in jars. Our mother would put a piece of wax paper and an elastic over the top of the jar. She’d poke some “breathing holes” in the top, and off to bed we would go…. placing our blinking “night lights” on the windowsills next to our beds. If the blinking stopped, we’d tap the jar to wake up the fireflies, until we got too tired to stay awake, then we (and our bug friends) all closed our eyes and had a good night’s sleep.
I’m fortunate to have such sweet memories of summer nights like that. It makes me sad to think that today’s children may never experience that magical delight. (Dang the “progress” of man!!!)

Wow – I didn’t realize how fortunate I am. My backyard is firefly central. Live on a small farm and it is funny to watch them interact with my dog when she accidentally changes her LED collar light to strobe (bumps it on stuff when poking around).

This is very encouraging to me regarding the health if my area! Don’t give up hope – we haven’t lost them yet!!
